Still Life

Still-LifeSo it’s the fall of 1987 and I’ve just started Art School. My favorite painting teacher, Robert Berkshire, after having seen me paint still life for a couple weeks, declares upon seeing my first figure painting, “I never want to see you paint a still life again!” The whole class laughed. “You should be painting figures.” To this day I love to paint and draw the figure, but I decided to try a still life as an exercise and I thought of Robert Berkshire a great deal. He passed in 2010 and I was saddened to hear, but I remember him fondly as he was not only my first painting teacher, but my last and always gave me good input. I wonder what he would say…
