I’ve been given a great opportunity. I get to talk about KISS AND one of my other favorite subjects; free speech. I was going to talk about this right when it happened, but other events have happened that make it even better!
Gene Simmons (founder/bassist/vocalist for Kiss) said some incredibly insensitive things related to the death of Prince. Now, I’ve been following them for 40 years, so it did NOT surprise me that he said what he said. If you know Gene, he constantly does this. His philosophy is “There is no such thing as bad publicity, just include my picture and spell my name correctly.”
Now, I disagree with what he said, BUT he has the right to say it. This is a core belief behind the founding of this country and something that I think about every day. Something is happening where everyone is too thin skinned and takes what everyone else says too seriously. If someone says something and YOU get upset, that is YOUR problem, not the person who said it. I’m not talking about a personal attack, I’m talking about just a random statement. Yes, what Gene said can be thought of as wrong, but if I get upset, it’s my problem and I have to deal with it. My feelings are my own.
Everybody criticized Gene, including Paul Stanley (his bandmate for over 40 years). His wife stood behind him and I applaud her for this. Soon after his comments became public, Gene’s family convinced him that he should apologize, and he did. This shows us many things; First that his family is able to confront him and have an open discussion. Next, Gene is able to step back and see the criticism that he is being given and use it. Lastly, he’s able to take responsibility for his mistake and apologize.
Now he didn’t necessarily backtrack on his comments, he admitted to being to harsh about it. He feels the way he feels, and that’s ok. That is ok for EVERYONE. We’re all allowed our own opinions and feelings.
Nikki Sixx (bassist, founder of Motley Crue) has been on a rampage about Gene’s comments. Again, he’s allowed his opinion, but at this point is just seems like he’s trying to pile on. Where was Nikki when Gene originally opened his mouth? I don’t remember Nikki berating Vince Neil (singer, founder of Motley Crue) when he committed vehicular manslaughter.
I think Gene is a narcissistic, misogynist pig, but I like his music and I think he’s a smart guy… AND that is just MY opinion, you don’t have to agree. Wonder if this will start a social media firestorm. 😉
