“Art is never finished, only abandoned.” -Leonardo DaVinci
Leonardo’s Mona Lisa is one of the most famous works of art in the world. It hangs in The Louvre in Paris. Leonardo was Italian (born in Vinci), so why is this painting in France?
Having fled his native Italy to avoid scandal, he was taken in by Francis I, the King of France. The King adored Leonardo and as legend has it, the great artist died in the King’s arms. As he was a resident of the king and he was still in possession of the Mona Lisa, it became the property of France. It’s been on display in The Louvre since 1797.
As I get to near the end of a work, I like to think I know when to stop. To this day, work that I did years ago I still see things I’d finish.
