As I’ve done on previous posts, I would like to stress that what I express here is simply my opinion and nothing else. I don’t hope that anyone agree with me or promote what I say, I am just sharing my thoughts. This is, after all, America. 😉 And know this; I greatly respect anyone that uses their talents.
Have a look at the images above. Click them to see them larger if necessary. What do you see?
Well images 1 & 3 are drawings and 2 & 4 are photographs. It’s pretty incredible that people have the patience to draw (or paint) something as realistic as this, but my question is why? If it LOOKS as much like a photograph AS a photograph why not just take a photograph? Not to discount the person’s abilities, but I’m not real sure how it qualifies as art. The photographer uses the camera (and developing tools) to capture a moment. The hyperrealist artist is obviously using their talents, but I’m not sure where it actually is classified? Is it more like illustration?
There is an amazing ability to copy here but there isn’t much creativity. Art is defined as “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” There is a moment of wonder at the fact that someone actually drew these, but beyond that I look at them and say, “ok, why didn’t they just take a picture?” Or where is the picture they drew from?
Again, not to under appreciate the achievement and use of the tools, but it just seems like copying to me… and hey, it’s just my opinion.
